India has long been a place that mesmerises and inspires photographers and travelers.
It’s definitely time for me to launch my first workshop in this incredible country. I have decided to focus on the beautiful and tranquil area of Kerala in the South of India.
This workshop will be an 8-day adventure capturing an area that is less intense and frenzied than many northern parts, with a stunning diversity of subjects.
“Kerala is South India’s most serenely beautiful state. A slender coastal strip is shaped by its layered landscape: almost 600km of glorious Arabian Sea coast and beaches; a languid network of glistening backwaters; and the spice- and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats.
Just setting foot on this swath of soul-quenching, palm-shaded green will slow your subcontinental stride to a blissed-out amble.” Lonely Planet
We have developed a fantastic itinerary that will combine all of the elements I know people love about these workshops, plus some extra special new things that you’ll enjoy.
Now, here are some of my Kerala workshop highlights:
Plentiful and diverse photo subjects – in Kerala that means people, local villages, and city life; the tea and spice plantations of the misty and cooling mountains; intense colours and textures of the verdant nature; azures and greens of the sea, the stunning beaches and coastline; the unique waterways and lagoons dotted with villages.
An excellent, but unobtrusive travel company – I have chosen to work with Kerala Connections who will organise all of the nitty gritty. Together we have crafted an itinerary that will give us maximum awesome photography time with great local support, from your transfer from the airport, to a local guide who will give us some background to the historical spots in Kochi. I have handpicked the hotels and a very cool houseboat for a one night backwaters adventure, where we get to stop the boat along the way and photograph local villages and the amazing nature.
Three locations – so we get maximum diversity of subject and adventure – beaches, city life, rural villages, mountains and landscapes, all kinds of incredible nature and the life that it brings.
In-depth photo teaching – I’ll be doing lots of group demos plus individual advice and support. I’ll be meeting you where you are at with your photography, and helping you develop from there. Whether that’s getting more confident with your camera, developing your personal style or working on composition. Whatever it is we’ll be taking our time to ensure you come on leaps and bounds with your photography.
This will be an immersive artistic and cultural experience
For all of those who know me, you’ll know I don’t do rushed experiences. It’s not in my nature to jump from place to place, taking thousands of images. You will never get the best photos of a country if you don’t spend time truly absorbing the atmosphere of the location and working on composing your images well.
You need to be connecting with the world around you – and that requires a relaxed and present mindset (I talk about this a lot, don’t worry. If this isn’t in your nature, I can teach you! I’ve taught lots of busy minds to slow down and get super-connected and creative with their images.)
I want to hit the right balance between seeing as much cool stuff that attracts so many people to this incredible region of India, with not being over touristy, and just another camera for the locals in a long line of cameras.
What I want you to get out of this workshop is:
I want this to be an enriching creative experience – I want you to go deeper with your photography than you’ve ever gone before
- I want you to amaze yourself at what you are capable of photographically. I will push you out of your comfort zone!
- I want us to have awesome fun – whether we are wandering through mangroves, little villages, tea plantations or misty mountains – taking photos and getting a little lost as we do it
- Be a great group – have fun together eating, chatting and sharing our ideas and photos
- I want us to explore and for each of you to capture something totally unique
- I want you to gain some serious camera skills! I teach lots of technical and creative techniques – in simple and effective ways. I am great at distilling very complex ideas into simple language – I guarantee you will learn a tremendous amount.
We’ll be covering some amazingly diverse and interesting locations, all with added assistance from local guides and support. Our accommodation will be mid-range, local and unique to the location with great facilities. I have chosen places that will add to the local atmosphere and feeling of our workshop (no big hotel chains for me!). The main highlights will be:
Fort Kochi – we’ll visit the city with a local guide to get a feeling of the history of the area. We’ll jump in rickshaws, capture street life and soak up the ambience of this historical and vibrant city. There will be evening options of a cooking class/demonstration followed by a beautiful meal. We can also take in a local dance performance and watch the performers as they are getting ready.
Kerala Backwaters – we’ll stay both in a local guesthouse and on a private traditional houseboat, touring the backwaters, stopping at local villages and locations we fancy. Water, verdant nature and lots of slow photography.
Munnar – up in misty mountains of the tea plantations we’ll photograph lush nature, local people and create some great mountainous landscape shots. We’ll have a walk with a local nature guide here too.
