Think ahead to next January. The cold has started to seep properly into your bones, the festive distraction of Christmas is long gone, and the sun is barely poking her head above the horizon – if indeed you can see it as we are ladened with days of grey cloud. Your camera is collecting dust in your closet and the little sunshine there is seems to have been greedily eaten by the time you leave work.

In the depths of all this grey and frost wouldn’t it be just, well, amazing, to leave the cold and dampness behind? And instead, head off to the vibrant colour of the tropical island of Cuba? To move away from email fatigue, excel spreadsheets and diaries that seem to subjugate you –  and into an exhilarating adventure of colour, light, people, joy, music, fun – and most of all photography?

Cuba is a world unto its own. A beautiful tropical island that has been cut off from the world for several decades. But the country is now at a point of enormous change in its attitudes to business and tourism. Come and experience the country at this exciting time of transition, before the country changes forever.

“Havana seduces the visitor with her good looks, her steamy weather, chrome-festooned American cars, zesty cocktails, pretty buildings, heart-stopping Afro-Cuban beats and hip-swivelling, story-telling, garrulous locals. With her bedrock layered with Spanish empire treasure, slave-fuelled sugar wealth and a heavy top coating of communism, Havana is simply one of the world’s most exciting, confusing and compelling capitals.” Time Out

We have lots of interesting people to meet along the way – local artists and photographers and musicians. We’ll be heading to local bars and private local restaurants, immersing ourselves in this stunning island and taking incredible photos – together.

  • The beautiful light of the tropics
  • Old crumbling, intensely colourful buildings in Havana
  • Creating our own portfolio of stunning images
  • Plenty of one-to-one and group tuition
  • Friendly people, awesome street photography
  • Photographing the lush tropical nature on our trip from Havana to Trinidad
  • Wandering the streets in the early morning and at dusk, photographing street life
  • Regular image reviews and group critiques of your images
  • Plentiful music, meeting local artists, photographers and writers
  • Local food and good cocktails!
  • Being with a small group of passionate photographers and adventurers who want to experience as much as possible of this incredible country

We are working with a very good local travel company, with local guides and my local contacts to put together a wonderful experience. The workshop will include both Havana and Trinidad (a town designated a UNESCO world heritage site, nestled between lush green mountains and the beach).

The workshop will emphasise local, unique and off-the-beaten track as well as the beauty, joy and magic of Cuba!

We will mix the accommodation between five nights in an old colonial boutique hotel in the centre of Old Havana and two nights at a b&b’s (Casas) in Trinidad. These are run by local families so we’ll be immersed in the local Cuban areas. Casas are basically furnished, but we’ve picked excellent ones – with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. We can be truly immersed in local Cuban life.

You will leave Cuba with your mind and body rejuvenated in the way that you are only after you’ve been intensely creative. You will spend time with passionate photographers like yourself, photograph the unique world of Cuba all under the warm rays of the Caribbean sunshine and explore local life and meet a huge variety of interesting people.

The effects of this trip will ripple over your life for weeks and months to come.

NB:  the temperature of Cuba in January is an average of 21 degrees, with a sea temperature of 25 degrees.

Will I have time to myself? Yes, I won’t overschedule you. There is photography workshops every day but there will always be opportunities to take a few hours out to take a walk by yourself, have a nap or drink rum cocktails in the sunshine.

Can I choose my own accommodation? Usually I am happy for people to pick their own hotels but this being Cuba, where things are not always easy or straightforward, I took the decision to work with a local travel company who can make all of our lives easier by organising the accommodation. That also means we’ll be staying together, making it all the more fun!

Can I stay longer? Of course, and if you’d like help with booking additional accommodation the travel company we are working with will be happy to assist you.

Will you book flights for me? Our travel company is happy to book flights for you if you’d prefer.

Can I use my credit or debit cards in Cuba? Infrequently for things like restaurants. There are banks and ATM’s where you can take out money while you are there, but you’ll want to bring a large amount of cash with you and exchange it at the airport (notes need to be good quality and non-torn, ripped etc.) Here is the UK government advice on money and the Tripadvisor page for people coming from outside the UK. Remember that queuing is an every-day part of life in Cuba.

Further questions? Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us! We are here to answer any question, query – big, small, tiny. Call Diana or Anthony on 020-7928 4178 or email
