Think ahead to next January. The cold has started to seep properly into your bones, the festive distraction of Christmas is long gone, and the sun is barely poking her head above the horizon – if indeed you can see it as we are ladened with days of grey cloud.
Your camera is collecting dust in your closet and the little sunshine there is seems to have been greedily eaten by the time you leave work.
In the depths of all this grey and frost wouldn’t it be just, well, amazing, to leave the cold and dampness behind? And instead, head off to the vibrant colour of the tropical island of Cuba? To move away from email fatigue, excel spreadsheets and diaries that seem to subjugate you – and into an exhilarating adventure of colour, light, people, joy, music, fun – and most of all photography?
Cuba is a world unto its own. A beautiful tropical island that has been cut off from the world for several decades. But the country is now at a point of enormous change in its attitudes to business and tourism. Come and experience the country at this exciting time of transition, before the country changes forever.
We will be working with Cuban local guide and fixers, Leif and Navi . Together we will be organising all the cool, local extras that will make this trip feel like a true local adventure. They only work with businesses run by locals – to help make it an authentic experience.
We’ll be eating fantastic home cooked meals at local homes, delicious meals at the best restaurants, making trips to galleries to meet local artists, having photo opportunities with local artisans and be taken to the best clubs – and many more experiences that will also be personalised to your passions and interests.
“Havana seduces the visitor with her good looks, her steamy weather, chrome-festooned American cars, zesty cocktails, pretty buildings, heart-stopping Afro-Cuban beats and hip-swivelling, story-telling, garrulous locals. With her bedrock layered with Spanish empire treasure, slave-fuelled sugar wealth and a heavy top coating of communism, Havana is simply one of the world’s most exciting, confusing and compelling capitals.” Time Out
- The beautiful light of the tropics
- Old crumbling, intensely colourful buildings in Havana
- Creating your own portfolio of stunning images
- Plenty of one-to-one and group tuition
- Friendly people, awesome street photography
- Photographing the lush tropical nature around Viñales

The workshop will include both Havana and Viñales, a lush rural town. The workshop will emphasise local, unique and off-the-beaten track as well as the beauty, joy and magic of Cuba!
We will mix the accommodation between five nights in well maintained local homes and apartments in Havana and two nights at b&b’s (casas particulares) in Viñales. These are run by local families so we’ll be immersed in the local Cuban areas. Casas are basically furnished, but we’ve picked excellent ones.
You will leave Cuba with your mind and body rejuvenated in the way that you are only after you’ve been intensely creative. You will spend time with passionate photographers like yourself, photograph the unique world of Cuba all under the warm rays of the Caribbean sunshine and explore local life and meet a huge variety of interesting people.
The effects of this trip will ripple over your life for weeks and months to come.
NB: the temperature of Cuba in January is an average of 25 degrees, with a sea temperature of 24 degrees.

If you have lots of questions, would like me to give you feedback on your images / ask about your suitability for the workshop or discuss anything about the workshop/photography at all, just drop Diana a line and we’ll get a 15 minute chat in the diary. Email her on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Will I have time to myself? Yes, I won’t overschedule you. There are photography workshops every day but there will always be opportunities to take a few hours out to take a walk by yourself, have a nap or drink rum cocktails in the sunshine.
Can I choose my own accommodation? Usually I am happy for people to pick their own hotels but this being Cuba, where things are not always easy or straightforward, I took the decision to work with an excellent Cuban travel guide who can make all of our lives easier by organising the accommodation. That also means we’ll be staying together, making it all the more fun!
Can I use my credit or debit cards in Cuba? Infrequently for things like restaurants. There are banks and ATM’s where you can take out money while you are there, but you’ll want to bring a large amount of cash with you and exchange it at the airport (notes need to be good quality and non-torn, ripped etc.) Here is the UK government advice on money and the Tripadvisor page for people coming from outside the UK. Remember that queuing is an every-day part of life in Cuba.

Here’s some feedback from past workshop clients:
“I had a really good time doing a private tuition day with Anthony and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone else who might be considering. What impressed me most about Anthony’s work was that while it is in a way easy to take a fantastic photo when you have a great scene before you, Anthony manages to make amazing photos out of the most ordinary places around London, and when I compared his offering to the other Photography Workshops that are advertised, his photos are clearly a step above the competition. “ Tom
“His teaching is easy to understand, laid back and humorous. Anyone can do this and be a better photographer as a result.” Harmen
“After Paris and Venice, London was my third workshop with Anthony. Extremely helpful to learn with him how to master your camera and the light. Anthony is not only an excellent professional who give good advice and tips, but also a great guy. To follow him around cities at dawn and shooting a lot of pictures is an unforgetable experience. Worth the trip!” Catherine
“Anthony also inspired me to look at photographic composition in a different way (manipulating angles, exploring reflections, managing too many subjects in the same frame)” Veda
“Istanbul is a fascinating and photogenic city and Anthony Epes’ photography workshop “Cities at Dawn” was the perfect vehicle for a solo female traveller, like myself, to discover a city in a non-touristic and yet safe way. The photography tuition was professional, unpretentious and “tailored”. I greatly appreciated that Anthony allowed me the space to both photograph and observe at my own pace whilst deftly encouraging me to venture out from the comfort zones of auto setting, telephoto lens’, cliched subjects and even daylight!” Rachel
“I learnt a lot on the course, particularly around seeing images in everyday things, composition, and how to recognise and use interesting light to improve my photos. I think that before I did the course I was in some ways in a bit of a photo rut, for instance settling for aperture priority and auto white balance; this course got me out of that and gave me some new inspiration.” Steve
“Anthony is a great instructor, who puts you at ease, offers good, understandable advice and is good company. I had done a photography course before, yet in the space of a couple of hours he made me understand some basics which i had missed in a very logical way.” Tripadvisor review
“It rekindled my photographic interest having slobbed out with my mobile phone camera for too long.” Wild Auk
“Anthony is a talented photographer who is also a very good teacher. He is excellent at giving you feedback on your composition and tips on using your photo gear. “ Danilo
