Vietnam has fascinated me for years – and I’ve been asked over and over to run a workshop here. After working on this for several months, we are now ready to launch a workshop in this incredible country.
Vietnam is a mesmerising place of natural beauty, friendly people with an incredible culture and history.
I am working with an excellent Vietnamese-based workshop/photography company – with a team of very experienced photographers and guides who will organise all of the logistics.
This means I can concentrate totally on your photography journey and experience.
Our workshop will be managed by people who are committed to responsible tourism, who have that same desire and ethos of working with local people that I do.
I will make this a once-in-a-lifetime-adventure.
We will make incredible photos, discover wonderful places and have a tremendous amount of fun together.
There is nothing more gratifying for me than hanging out with other passionate photographers – sharing ideas, tips and of course our photos!
We will start by capturing the street life and atmosphere of Hanoi – from the early morning markets, to creating street portraits and reportage, as well as capturing the atmosphere of this energetic city.
We’ll wander through the original streets of the Old Quater, capture the fast-paced awakening modernity of Hanoi, check out the evolving arts scene and of course meet people and experience the city in all of it’s vibrancy.
We’ll then head north to Ha Giang province, in northern Vietnam, to explore villages and the breath-taking natural beauty of one of the more remote and un-touristy parts of the country.
Ha Giang is home to amazing mountain ranges, almost otherworldly in their formations.
I’ll show you how to create beautiful landscapes of the many epic vistas around the Dong Van Rocky Plateau and the mystical landscapes of Quan Ba.
We will capture sunrise at the awe-inspiring Ma Pi Leng Pass and the islands of the shimmering Thac Ba Lake.
The province is home to many minority villages, with diverse cultures which we will explore. We’ll stop by some busy markets and stay in some wonderful locally run eco-lodges.
We’ll also heading up to the tiny village of Lo Lo, close to the border of China. We’ll meet people and create portraits of village life all across the province.
November is one of the best times to visit this region – with cool, dry weather and an average temperature of 24 degrees. It’s an excellent time for photography in the region.
We will also create photo stories of the people and journey we are making.
We’ll do a mix of iconic sights and off the beaten track. You’ll get to capture world famous sights – and I’ll show you how to capture them in interesting and unique ways; there is always a new angle, I promise.
I will be working with each individual in achieving your individual visual voice. Helping you come away with images that are personal to you.
And if you know me, you’ll know we’ll also be seeing the places and meeting people that I have sought out to bring the ‘unexpected and unique’ into our workshops.
I want to show you how I discover a new place, how I dig into the local culture, history and community to create my photos.
But most importantly – this workshop is about you. It’s about your photo journey – about you growing in skill, technique and conscience. It’s about your creativity and learning how to keep improving your art.
I am so excited to be doing this – and I hope you will join me for this incredible adventure.
Here are some more details:
Accomodation: In Hanoi we will be staying in a great 3/4 star hotel. On our trip to Ha Giang Province we will be staying at eco-lodges: places run by local communities with an integration into their environment. We will have nice places to stay and eat – and also the opportunity to meet and connect with locals.
Food: We will mix this up between cool local cafes and restaurants in the trendy hot spots of Hanoi, and excellent street food and gourmet restaurants. We will try a range of food, and make sure that everyone’s dietary needs are catered for.
Vietnamese food is delicious; fresh, flavorful and vibrant. Included in the workshop is a street food tour too, so we can get the lowdown on all the local spots and foods. These are always super fun as so much about a culture is revealed by how and what people eat.
Transport: From airport pick-up and drop off, to all of the transport around Hanoi and Ha Giang, we’ll have private transport all the way.
Local guide: We will have a Vietnamese guide at all times, who is organising and supporting our activities. This will make our journey as seamless and easy as possible. It’ll give us the chance to talk to people too, to find out stories and visit places you wouldn’t ever find on your own.
Local photographers: I’ll also be including a few walks with some local photographers who will show us their perspective of what and how they love to shoot. These sessions are great as photography is such a subjective experience – I love to get input in from people whose photography I admire.
My tuition: We will be covering an exciting array of photo subjects – from street photography, urban landscapes to epic landscapes, nature photography and portraits in the countryside using the landscape as our background. I want to create a journey for you that helps to elevate your photography to amazing new heights.
A few of the photo highlights:
- The crazy/amazing Hanoi ‘railway village‘
- Lots of street photography, capturing street life, in the bustling streets of Hanoi
- Special sessions on overcoming your fear of photographing strangers (I have great tips for this!)
- I’ll show you how to create beautiful landscapes of the many epic vistas around the Dong Van Rocky Plateau, otherworldly nature of Quan Ba, sunrise at the awe-inspiring Ma Pi Leng Pass and the islands of the shimmering Thac Ba Lake
- We’ll be stopping and exploring the minority villages dotted around the valleys and countryside creating portraits, villages scene and finding interesting photos wherever we go
- We’ll dive into the busy Sunday ethnic markets
I will provide plentiful demonstrations and in-depth sessions about the various techniques we’ll be using. I’ll set challenges and provide daily feedback on your images.
We’ll work as group, create our mini-photo stories and all come away with an incredible portfolio of images.
Itinerary – guide
This will give you an idea of the activities/time we will be doing. Given the nature of photography, we also like to be spontaneous, responding to weather and light opportunities and interesting experiences that arise. Anthony will change or adapt the itinerary also according to the interests and moods of the group – giving us plenty of time in each location to ensure great photography!
Day 1 – Hanoi arrival, airport pick up + group meet-up.
Day 2 – Sunrise at Long Bien Bridge and market, and ‘banana island’, a village community on an island in the middle of the Red River. Afternoon Hanoi city tour and street food tour.
Day 3 – Tho Ha craft village tour. We head out to a beautifully preserved Red River village about 50km outside Hanoi. Local families produce rice paper pancakes, which are then spread out to dry in the sun throughout the village alleyways.
Day 4 – On the Tracks Hanoi. It’s an early start to catch trains returning from the north, and passing through Hanoi’s ‘railway village’. Afternoon visit to the Museum of Ethnology, a great introduction to the ethnic cultures of the north.
