Even when I’m not madly busy, I think living a ‘modern life’ – always planning, doing, being ‘on’ and open to the constant stimulation of technology – can make our attention quite fractured.
I have been thinking a lot about this recently, as I know the only way to create truly creative work of any kind is to have a deep attention and connection with what we are doing.
That’s tough for many of us, right?
I was thinking about what I can contribute to help people get deep into the creative process, and over the last few months Di and I have created a really special new fine art photography workshop.
This workshop will focus on immersing yourself into a subject, and creating a handful of incredibly stunning photographs. Not 50 or 100. No, just a handful (I’m thinking between 6-10).
I will guide you through this.
(Remembering of course that Ansel Adams thought: “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.” So we’d be pushing the boat out as far as Ansel is concerned.)
This 7-day workshop will be located in a remote part of the Yucatan Peninsula, known for its ‘waters of 7 colours’.
Growing up in Southern California I had many opportunities to explore Mexico (although I wish I’d done a lot more before I was whisked off my feet by my beautiful English wife and taken to London :))
Although I did get back there in 2012 to spend a couple of weeks in Mexico City to photograph the Homeless World Cup. One of the best experiences of my life!
There is so much diversity in this country – it’s so vast and filled with incredible photography opportunities.
I’ve chosen the awe-inspiring location of Bacalar for this 7-day experience. This beautiful area is in the south of the Yucatan Peninsula, away from the very touristy areas around Cancun.
This workshop will be structured around the creative journey:
- We will start in the exploration & ideas phase by exploring the local area and the different subjects you could focus on
- I will help you develop a vision for the project you want to create, and we will work together as a group providing feedback
- I will then provide technical and creative guidance to help you realise your vision
- Finally we will work together to process (the other half of photography!) your images ready for printing after the workshop (a professionally printed portfolio of your images is included in this workshop.)
I wanted to be situated in breathtaking nature for this workshop – with some ancient history thrown in; Mayan ruins in the jungle are close at hand too.
Bacalar is on a 60km lake of clear deep blue waters and white sparkling sand. It’s a sleepy little town, but that’s totally the point. Less touristy than the northern parts of the Yucatan.
This is turn up, switch off, and just get totally into your photography, the fun of being together in a group and the deep relaxation.
It will create an atmosphere of incredible peacefulness and allow you to soak in amazing inspiration from the environment.
I’ll be working with each of you during the workshop to create a portfolio of up to ten images which I will then have printed at Metro Imaging in London. They print all my fine art prints and are of outstanding quality.
I will work with you on processing (the other half of photography), colour correction – the whole thing. So, on top of all the good times of a photo trip, you will also have a beautiful and exciting portfolio to look forward to when you get home.
I believe photos shouldn’t live on hard drives and memory cards! They need to printed and they need to be seen. To have your work professionally printed really changes your relationship to your photos.
This workshop is about:
- Deep immersion in your creativity
- Photographing intense colour, texture, light, reflection and shapes
- Working with simple subjects to create extraordinary images (a great challenge!)
- This will be ‘slow photography’ – like ‘slow food’ this is about being immersed in your subject which is all around you – and taking your time to work with your subject to create incredible images. There will be no rushing from place to place.
- Plus in the middle of the jungle we’ll photograph the awe-inspiring Mayan ruins
We will use the tranquility of this very quiet place to help you get deeply connected with your subject, helping you access different parts of yourself and your creativity.
You will come back feeling totally refreshed – your mind, your vision, your self.
Accommodation – Villas Ecotucan
I have chosen a very very special place for us to stay – a small eco-resort set by the waters of the lagoon edging into the jungle. The staff here are very passionate about nature and the locale, and will provide a guided jungle walk and information about the nature here. There is also kayaking, swimming, campfires and cycling on offer. It’s a simple place but with everything we’ll need – beautiful villas to stay in and a little restaurant and bar.
“Spend your days surrounded by nature at Villas Ecotucan Ecological Resort located on the shores of the beautiful Laguna Bacalar, Mexico’s second largest freshwater lake.
Stay in one of ten comfortable and spacious stone cabins with thatched roof surrounded by tropical gardens and reminiscent of a Mayan settlement offering guests a tranquil base for relaxing with nature.
Swim, kayak or sail the magnificent lagoon, explore the many nearby ruins, hike or bike jungle trails, or just enjoy our scenic beauty, birds and wildlife. At the end of the day, fall asleep to the comforting hum of the surrounding jungle.”
